The World Steel Association announced the latest ranking of the world’s 40 major steel-producing countries (regions) in 2022 on February 2. China ranked first with 1.013 billion tons of crude steel production, followed by India with 124.7 million tons (up 5.5% year-on-year), Japan with 89.2 million tons (down 7.4% year-on-year), the United States with 80.7 million tons (down 5.9% year-on-year), and Russia with 71.5 million tons (down 7.2% year-on-year). Global crude steel production in 2022 was 1,878.5 million tons, down 4.2% year-on-year.

Among the top 40 steel-producing countries (regions), 30 saw a year-on-year decline in crude steel production in 2022. Ukraine had the largest percentage decline, with crude steel production down 70.7% year-on-year to 6.3 million tons. Spain (down 19.2% year-on-year to 11.5 million tons), France (down 13.1% year-on-year to 12.1 million tons), Italy (down 11.6% year-on-year to 21.6 million tons), the United Kingdom (down 15.6% year-on-year to 6.1 million tons), Vietnam (down 13.1% year-on-year to 20 million tons), South Africa (down 12.3% year-on-year to 4.4 million tons), and the Czech Republic (down 11.0% year-on-year to 4.3 million tons) also saw their crude steel production decline by more than 10% year-on-year.

In 2022, crude steel production in 10 countries, including India, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Pakistan, Argentina, Algeria, and the United Arab Emirates, showed a year-on-year increase. Pakistan’s crude steel production increased by 10.9% year-on-year to reach 6 million tons, followed by Malaysia with a 10.0% year-on-year increase to reach 10 million tons. Iran increased by 8.0% year-on-year to reach 30.6 million tons, the United Arab Emirates increased by 7.1% year-on-year to reach 3.2 million tons, and Indonesia increased by 5.2% year-on-year to reach 15.6 million tons. Argentina increased by 4.5% year-on-year to 5.1 million tons, Saudi Arabia increased by 3.9% year-on-year to 9.1 million tons, Belgium increased by 0.4% year-on-year to 6.9 million tons, and Algeria increased by 0.2% year-on-year to 3.5 million tons.
